Educational Problems
Education is an essential development for human resources. Improvement the quality of education will lead to the creation of high quality human resources and enable the acceleration of the process of national development.
The vast majority of Indonesian citizens have only complete part of the nine year compulsory education programme, with 33.42% finishing elementary school and 16.65% junior high school. Only 16.17% complete senior high school (including vocational high school) and a tiny percentage (3.39%) are higher education graduates (academy and university).
According to Indonesian Statistic 2003, most Indonesians are aware of the importance of an elementary school education in starting their children off in life. But school attendance declines sharply by junior high school, falling to only 63.5%, it slumps to only 4.06% by senior high school, and only 8.6% of students continue on college of which a mere 3% graduate.
There are many reasons children aged 7 – 18 cannot attend school or drop out. The major factor is the lack of funds for tuition (67%); second highest was 'other reasons" (15.8%) followed by children having to work to support themselves or their families. (Central Bureau of Statistic 2003).
