The following text is for questions 12-15.

A natural disaster is a terrible occurrence, e.g. a great flood, a big fire or an earthquake. It usually causes great suffering and the loss of large sums of money. Casualties are injured or die and several people are left homeless and need medical care.
Floods occur when the water of rivers, lakes, or streams overflow their banks and spill onto the surrounding land. Floods are caused by many different things. Often heavy rainstorms that last for a time cause floods, but not all heavy storms are followed by flooding, such as if the surrounding land is flat and can absorb the water. If, however, the land is hard and rocky, heavy rain cannot be absorbed. Where the banks are low, a river may overflow and flood adjacent lowland.
In many parts of the world floods are caused by tropical storms called hurricanes or typhoons. They bring destructive high speed winds, torrents of rain and flooding. When a flood occurs, the destruction to the surrounding land can be severe. Whole villages and towns may be swept away by water drifting swiftly over land. Railroad tracks and buckles are uprooted from their beds. Highways are washed away.
When a building caught fire, the fireman pitched in to help battle the blaze. Before pumps were invented, people formed bucket brigades to fight fires. Standing side by side, they formed a human chain from the fire to nearby well or river. They passed buckets of water from hand to hand to be poured onto the flames.
The fire damage depended a great deal on where it happened. In the country or a small village, only a single house might burn down. But in crowded cities, fire often destroyed whole blocks and neighbourhoods before being controlled.

12. What can possibly prevent rivers and lakes from overflowing?
            A. An absorbent bed.
            B. A rocky surrounding.
            C. A low land.
            D. A high bank.
            E. A high road.

13. We know from the text that…
            A. rivers can cause heavy floods.
            B. people can make money from floods.
            C. the destruction by flood is always less severe.
            D. flood water is absorbed by land directly.
            E. typhoon cause heavy floods.

14. We know from the text that…
            A. the pump is the only tool used by fire fighters now.
            B. the pump helps people fight fires more efficiently.
            C. fires in big cities are always very big.
            D. people no long use buckets to control fire.
            E. only firemen can control fires in crowded cities.

15. “They bring destructive high speed winds, torrents of rain and flooding.” (Paragraph 3)

The following text is for questions 16-19.

Being on time is a beautiful social ethic and one of great importance, as it creates efficiency in systems and forms respect for one another. However, it is one of the many values that is not easy for our students to learn.
Inner discipline, one that comes from an understanding of the set rules and regulations, is the highest form of behaviour. Most excellent schools try to instill this with a loving environment. Whey, even adults arrive late for meetings, work, etc. Here, we do not agree that late comers should be shut out. They can give them warnings, most of which are enough to make them try their best to reach the school on time, afterwards. If this fails, invite their parents to school.
By closing the gates, the school is behaving cruelly, to which we prefer not to expose our children. Every school has a responsibility to implant good educational principle, but it should be in appropriate ways. Good schools create competitive students who can organize themselves effectively in society, so that everyone gets a quality life as a result of ethics and values learned for as long as 12 years.
Children are precious and dependent on adults for guidance. Understanding them is the key and to this end, both parents and schools must work hand in hand without playing the blame game.

16. What should the school do if a student can’t stop his/her habit of being late for school?
            A. Punish them.
            B. Shut them.
            C. Fail them.
            D. Talk to their parents.
            E. Try to understand them.

17. What does the writer think to be “the highest form of behavior”? (Paragraph 2)
            A. Respect for one another.
            B. Not being late for school.
            C. Understanding the regulations.
            D. Understanding the rules.
            E. Inner discipline.

18. “Children are precious and dependent on adults for guidance.” (Paragraph 4)
The underlined word is closest in meaning to…
            A. Valuable
            B. Excellent
            C. Clever
            D. Innocent
            E. Naïve

19. What does the writer think of closing the school gates?
            A. It is good for students.
            B. It should not be done.
            C. It is not an effective punishment.
            D. It will make student come late again.
            E. It is effective to make students come earlier.

Title                 : Stop Growing Older… Grow Younger
Author             : J Collins Towers
Rating              : Good!
Publisher         : Booklocker.com, Inc.
Web page        : booklocker.com
Reviewed by    : Kym Markowitz

Stop Growing Older… Grow Younger contains a massive, almost overwhelming, amount of information regarding methods the author claims will not only keep a person from aging, but will reverse the aging process. Some of the suggestions J Collin Towers are not unexpected. He suggests getting plenty of exercise, including strength training and he touts the benefits of drinking plenty of water. He also spans pages talking about good nutrition and the importance of eating lean meats, unrefined whole grains and plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants. When he discusses specific nutrients, Towers included several helpful lists of the most beneficial foods, including a list of functional foods, which “promote health and provide more than basic nutrition.” He also recommends many lesser known treatments to heal and restore the body, including ozone therapy, use of magnetism and supplements that would be unfamiliar to the majority of people.
Towers has done extensive research into health and fitness. Unfortunately, most of the information is poorly cited and from potentially unreliable internet sources and the reference list does not appear to be as long as one would expect for a book this large and full of information. While it’s very possible that much of the information contained in the book is accurate and factual, it is difficult for the reader to sort through. Collins encourages the reader to form their own opinion about the methods and products mentioned in his book, however; this would be made easier if the sources of information were better documented. An index would also be very helpful and would improve the book’s value as a resource. Perhaps these concerns would be addressed in a later edition.
Overall, Stop Growing Older… Grow Younger provides a wealth of information for the reader to consider, if they wish to improve their own health. However, readers should be warned not to take the advice verbatim without doing their own research.

20. “However, readers should be warned to not take the advice verbatim without doing their own research.” (Paragraph 3)
The synonym of the word ‘verbatim’ is…
            A. Careful

            D. All the information is from reliable sources.
            E. The book doesn’t contain an index.

22. The following are what Kym Markowitz says about Towers, the author of the book, EXCEPT
            A. he suggests getting plenty of exercise
            B. he has done extensive research health and fitness
            C. he says that thinking positively is important
            D. he includes several helpful lists of the most beneficial foods
            E. he spans pages talking about good nutrition

The following text is for questions 23-25.

Study groups are commonly utilized by many students to prepare themselves for class discussions, examinations, or class presentations. They can also make use of it to review their weak points and learn new ideas. I myself find that we can learn more effectively in a study group. However, I can’t deny that study groups also have disadvantages.
On the positive side, a study group gives the students motivation to study and update their readings because the other members are likely to give them encouragement. It also helps them learn new ideas as well as important points they missed on their readings. Most of the members in my study group are very open in sharing what they know. These alert me that I should update my readings so I could also share in return.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of a study group is the part of compelling the students to attend it after class or during their free time. Commitment among each member is also an important aspect in a study group. Hence the members of a study group have to set aside other activities to study together.
To join a study group or not is the student’s own choice, because there are other students who learn better when they do it on their own. If a student thinks they will be learning effectively in a group, they had better go on and enjoy the fun way of learning.

23. Some students are motivated to study in a study group because the other members likely…
            A. give them better ideas
            B. come up with important ideas
            C. are more clever than them
            D. solve the problem
            E. encourage them to study

24. The writer finds it necessary to join a study group because…
            A. he knows study groups also have disadvantages
            B. he should update his readings
            C. he can learn more effectively
            D. the members in his group are open minded
            E. his friends have more knowledge compared to him

25. From the text, we know that…
            A. a study group has nothing to do with reading ability.
            B. the members have to sacrifice their time for their study group.
            C. the writer doesn’t think a study group is useful for him.
            D. an agreement made to study regularly in a study group isn’t necessary.
            E. a study group is always useful for everybody.

The following text is for questions 26-29.

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without making physical contact with the object. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of aerial sensor technology to detect and classify objects on Earth (both on the surface and in the atmosphere and oceans) by means of propagated signals (e.g. electromagnetic radiation emitted from aircrafts or satellites.)
There are two main types of remote sensing: passive remote sensing and active remote sensing. Passive sensors detect natural radiation that is emitted or reflected by the object or surrounding area being observed. Reflected sunlight is the most common source of radiation measured by passive sensors. Examples of passive remote sensors include film photography, infra-red, charge-coupled devices, and radiometers. Active collection, on the other hand, emits energy in order to scan objects and areas whereupon a sensor then detects and measures the radiation is reflected or backscattered from the target. RADAR and LIDAR are examples of active remote sensing where the time delay between emission and return is measured, stabilizing the location, height, speed and direction of an object.

26. From the text we know that remote sensing…
            A. is a way to obtain information about an object or phenomenon
            B. is not difficult to do
            C. makes physical contact with the object
            D. does not make use of sensors
            E. does not make use of propagated signals

27. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
            A. Active sensing is better than passive sensing.
            B. The energy in sunlight is important for remote sensing.
            C. Passive sensing is not as strong as active sensing.
            D. The source of energy radiated for sensing determines whether it is the active or passive type.
            E. Active remote sensing and passive remote sensing are equally useful for the development of knowledge and technology.

28. Based on the text we can say that…
            A. remote sensing is expensive technology
            B. remote sensing is useful for transportation
            C. we can apply the technology to study animals
            D. medical science can be improved through remote sensing
            E. remote sensing makes it possible to collect information of an object in a dangerous area.

29. What is the text about?
            A. The description of remote sensing in general.
            B. The advantages of remote sensing.
            C. The pros and cons of remote sensing.
D. Why remote sensing is broadly used.
            E. The history of remote sensing.
